The Acropolis

This 2,500-year-old rocky outcrop perched in Athens’ modern metropolis is the sight you’ve only dreamed about. The Acropolis finds itself at the very top of our list because if you do one thing in Athens, it has to be this.

Temple of Poseidon

Athens isn’t short on treats for fans of Greek mythology. This temple at Sounion, which is dedicated to the mighty Poseidon, should be one of the first temples on your checklist.

The Odeon of Herodes Atticus theatre

On the foot of the Acropolis hill sits the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, a stone Roman conservatory that was built in the 2nd century AD. The conservatory was destroyed in 267 AD and restored in the early 50s. Today, it is considered one of the best-preserved sites in the country, and it still operates as a venue for concerts and other performances.

The National Gardens

Tucked away in the heart of Athens, the National Gardens offer a beautiful retreat from the bustle of the concrete capital.

Varvakios Agora

The Monastiraki area’s indoor and outdoor food market delights the senses. Starting in the wee hours, Greek vendors bellow out their best deals in an attempt to sell fresh meat, fish, fruit, spices and products from around the country.

Plaka

Plaka, the oldest residential neighborhood in Athens, is a labyrinth of narrow streets. Stunning neoclassical architecture, quaint shops and traditional kafenios line every cobbled path. During summer, the pink and red hues of bougainvillea climb between buildings and splash heavenly colors across the scenic streets. As you wander through the streets, you’ll feel the magnetic pull from the Tower of the Winds – a Pentelic clocktower dating back as far as the first century AD.

The National Archaeological Museum

See the stars of ancient Greece through a contemporary lens at the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. It’s home to some of the most important collections of ancient Greek art, including the Antikythera Mechanism, the Mask of Agamemnon and the Statue of Zeus. Listen as an expert guide unravels the story of each piece and shares the wonder of Greek civilization through the ages.

Monastiraki and Psirri

Monastiraki’s bustling flea market and vibrant square pulse with activity around the clock. Browse the stalls full of unique treasures and barter for a keepsake, or savor a traditional Greek coffee in the cool shadow of the Acropolis. Neighboring Psirri is known for its street art and lively nightlife. Drink in the atmosphere, soak up the conversations and prepare to experience Athens like a local for the night.
