From cookery workshops, to basket weaving, historical walks, cycling, hiking and beekeeping – meeting the local people is at the heart of the Beit Al Baraka experience – as it is their stories and insights that make this beautiful and little visited part of northern Jordan come alive. Here you’ll wake to cockerel crowing as the sound of the call to prayer floats over the village. Then, sit down at table laden with local delicacies to a family style breakfast before setting off on your chosen activities and learning about the way of life and traditions of Umm Qais. At the end of the day you can relax in the garden (or on the roof its magnificent views look towards three countries) before enjoying a mouth-watering home-cooked dinner. Beit Al Baraka is located in a residential neighbourhood and has three twin bedded guestrooms that are simply decorated with local rugs and old black and white photographs. The two shared bathrooms are along the corridor. An inviting common sitting room features locally made furniture and is decorated with colourful Jordanian rugs. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available.

Beit Aziz Boutique Hotel

Beit Aziz Boutique Hotel is located within an old mansion boasting an elaborate stone façade in the heart of the Ottoman market town of As-Salt. Built in the early 1900s, this family home has been converted into a simple but charming small guesthouse that is within easy walking distance from As-Salt’s markets and landmarks. The property is locally managed, which ensures that all guests receive a warm Jordanian welcome, and is accessed from the street by a flight of stairs (no lift) which leads to the reception, gift-shop selling locally produced needle work, and restaurant with an enclosed terrace offering views over As-Salt. Accommodation at Beit Aziz is in four simply furnished ensuite rooms all of which have televisions and internet access. Two of the guestrooms resemble standard hotel rooms and have views looking over As-Salt, but as they are next to the restaurant, can be noisy at times. On the floor above, the two historic rooms are quieter and have exposed stone walls and vaulted ceilings – but note that the windows look onto an internal courtyard with public seating. Beit Aziz guesthouse is a community empowerment project, that for the adventurous, offers interesting possibilities as an alternative base to Amman, an hour’s drive to the west.
